If you are older and expect to get paid the same salary for the same skills you acquired 5 or 10 years ago then far greater threat than a younger cheaper version of you will knock you out: Globalization.Recently someone 20 years younger than myself with an Ivy League PhD / MBA, from bio physics NASA division took over my job for 40% less pay. It mattered not because three years prior I had been hard on task acquiring new skills in Genome Researched delivered via Nanomedical Devices. So I ended up in a position making 100% better than before and within shot of kicking open the doors for IPO participation. Had I not had the foresight of hacking together the set of skill knowledge that required sacrificing evenings, weekends, vacation time I would have been one of those winning as to how a younger person than myself had taken me out of the job market. The reality is that even if this young NASA fellow had not taken me out; some double PhD / MBA from India would have at 70% less than my salary at the time. If you already have a Master or PhD is not so much about getting another set of degrees; but about gaining an ever increasing combination of skill sets that are guided by your personal vision as well as both market forces and technological development. One of the extremely cool things about getting older is that if you have been paying attention and you are on task you can predict both the next tsunami and opportunity doors. Outrunning the first while at the same time kicking down the doors for the second. As I have gotten older I am much more resolute and intense than I have ever been. Wishing everyone the vision and the courage to navigate these new economic times. If you are older recognize your advantages and get on task so that you come on top.

Sounds like the individual who just landed the sales package just updated thier resume strategically. Frankly, anything over 10 years ago, are you really contacting those people?! And, are they really still at the company?! Sure, some are, but, people want to know where you are currently. As an Art Director, I would not show samples from ten years ago. I might highlight accomplishments, but not date and give irrelevant information.

Yes, and I agree, you MUST negotiate. Failure to do so is only on you. I have learned throughout my career and even my personal life, if you don't ask, you don't receive. But, you MUST ask!!!!

Okay, I've got to reply to you. First off, I am from India myself. The only time you get paid less is when you are on contract from a company in India. If you get paid less otherwise, you weren't doing your job in salary negotiations. Secondly, it isn't always discrimination based on where you are from. It could be 1) They got in earlier than you so took advantage of promotional opportunities, and 2) it could be the general chip on your shoulder that very clearly shows to everyone around you. And yes, most people from India have it to a certain extent, including me. Nobody particularly likes it when a person seems to be looking down on him/her. Try not doing it and you will be suprised how quickly you might rise in the ranks. Finally, one last thing about discrimination. It has always been here. Even with Indian managers, they try to be preferential to their own people, i.e. gujrati, punjabi, etc. I've witnessed the better qualified candidate lose out due to not being the right type of indian. Also, try looking back home in India at the help wanted ads. A lot of them clearly state M or F, and what is the top age requisite. So discrimination is everywhere, learn to deal with it.

Perhaps for now you are secure, your skills may be unique, and maybe you are a lucky one. In Japan it was expected that people get hired and retire from the same workplace -it is no longer so. Younger people need jobs too and many of them are not only well educated but have new set of skills that older generation does not. The people from India are discriminated if for having more education than you do and they get 30% of your salary for doing the same job or more. WHAT A SHAME! American MACHO/MUCHO is faded glory by now...discrimination seems to be thriving in economical crisis and job security is only a temporal convenience until one day wooooshhh.....gone!

Thank you for your post. So often, individuals tend to sell themselves short. We as experienced Sales professionals do have work and life experience that no amount of "PRETTY" or "YOUTHFUL" can ever hope to measure up to. There is alot to be said for work and life experience. Don't be so quick to sell yourself or your accomplishments short. Believe me, there is an employeer out there who is going to appreciate the whole package you will bring to their organization!

For months I listened to recruiters tell me, don't date yourself. Remove dates from schools on your resume, remove jobs older than 10 years, dumb down your resume, etc. Well, after 6 months with numerous interviews and ALWAYS getting beat out by young blonds, I decided to "recognize my advantages". I put dates back on schools on my resume, listed all my jobs and accomplishments on a 2 page resume. Now, I had quality interviews with companies that were looking for mature, highly experienced salespeople. I just accepted sales position with a great package!
