I've seen this happen way too often. I have come to believe that this is how ALL of the CRO's operate. I was hired by a mid-size CRO in Kansas City, UBC. It is my firm belief that I was hired only because they were desperate to get a study up and running. Once they were able to screen more qualified candidates, I was let go. I have a college degree and a fairly good background in Clinical Research, but did not have the science degree they now seem to look for. They can only hire so many for a study, but they can and do keep looking. It is a competitive market out there and they definitely keep people "on hold". My advice is to keep on looking...because they are too!!

Many times hiring managers attempt to go around HR with hiring process since the talent market has become so competitive. I personally have known three VPs who bring in candidates, do all the interviews and get nixed by HR when trying to make the offer (salary inequities, hiring freezes, benefits promises which won't fly, etc.) Check the company carefully for merger / financial news. Talk to other contacts. Its difficult to know how much time, expense and effort to put into the process and, it certainl doesn't help when dealing with companies that do not have their acts together. Good luck. We're all in the same boat and faced with the same difficulties of figuring out the new rules in this economy.

I passed the phone and F2F interview and didn't hear from the company. Several months later, I got call and a job offer directly from the dept's director. I definitely didn't expect to get the job offer as I didn't hear from the company for a long time. When I told them that I have 2 others that I am waiting for, they patiently waited for my decision in 2 weeks. I ended up not taking the job as the other companies' offers are better than what they have offered. I liked the company but they are not willing to negotiate. I guess their thinking is that there are other people who are unemployed who will easily accept the job whatever the offer is.

though i agree with the most recent poster.. the problem is you can rub some people the wrong way by "demanding the truth". I agree its frustrating, but if you truly want the job you have to play the game. Depends how hard you wish to play it or if you are willing to burn a bridge by basically calling the rep whom you are dealing with a "liar" and demanding "otherwise." Who knows, they could actually be telling you the truth...

I find it deplorable that on top of everything else we job hunters have to face, we must try to figure out "the game". Someone, somewhere in that company knows the truth of what is going on with the position. Refuse to settle for the information you are getting. Speak to everyone in the chain and tell them it is imperative you get the whole story about the job. If you are not getting responses to your inquiries...the job is not as close as you may have been led to believe. If you are confident the true fact is the position is in limbo, set deadlines and rules for them and for yourself and proceed accordingly.

Similar thing happened to me, twice in this economy. Offers sent out then the jobs were re-evaluated, one as I was on actually driving across the country to start the position. If you do state you have other offers, don't be surpised if they DO NOT make an offer. And be sure you do have that other offer. Do not make this statement as a sort of threat or as a way of trying to force the decision. They may think twice that you are truly serious about their company, and go the other direction.

Re: Something weird happens... Same scenario!!   Log In to Report Post

This exact same scenario happened to me: the hiring manager of a large pharma group was approved to interview me, he wanted to hire me but he was denied to hire me because the company went into a hiring freeze. He told me everything very clearly, and 2 months later it was still the same situation with one of his employees doing the job of 2 persons because he is still not allowed to hire externally.Contact the hiring manager directly and ask him what's going, is there a hiring freeze? Stay in contact with him, but keep interviewing and accept any other good job you may find... Since then, I have accepted an other job (very similar I may add) because I was not going to wait forever.

How's your credit? I've lost two solid job offers (and probably more like 6 or 7 if my suspicions are correct) in the last 18 months due to my credit report. I have the same experience as you describe: passed the HR phone screen, passed the hiring manager phone screen, great F2F and presentation, top candidate, references contacted, background check etc. I have great references (including 2 of my physicians), solid work history, degree and publications, clean driving record, and no criminal record whatsoever. My only problem? Bad credit. Long story short, I overextended myself financially, got laid off, and my house of cards collapsed. It's become a catch-22 for many, and I know I'm not alone. Yes, I brought this on myself, I'm not asking for pity. But I can't fix my credit without a good job, and I can't get a job in my chosen field because of bad credit. Has anyone else experienced this?

It could be that the position is no longer available because it has been discontinued. Mergers, reorganizations, and poor economy has made this a common occurence these days. Check more into merger, reorg, possibilities. However, I wouldn't lose the other offers for this position.

Just liek employers today -- who said we employees have to be loyal? Its always great to stay with a company sa long as possible, but just liek if the company needs to cut -- you may be their choice even if for no apparant reason.. so shoudl YOu look out for you. So take the other offer. No need to tell this co that you are. IF this co comes through in a few weeks, re-evaluate your situation, the new job, etc.. and if you still want to go to it.... do so. Today's world of staying at a job for years is long gone. Do what is right for you .. just be truthful to yourself about the reasons why you choose what you do. You'll be fine :)

This is not that unusual in this economy. In my experience it's more common with large, highly bureaucratic companies. In companies like that, approval to interview does not mean approval to hire. Once identified, the top candidate is submitted for a final review and approval by the next level of management. It's at that point that these managers get cold feet, and decide that they will just save the money, and leave the position unfilled.

Definitely take another offer. I had the same thing happen to me - the manager supposedly submitted the offer to HR and then they froze the job but I was assured when they unfreeze it, I'd be the first one they'd call, so just hang in there. I even had a friend working there. Well that was 4 months ago and I saw the job posted again on their website and had called and left a message and that was 2 months ago...

The company is not being honest with you now, do you think it is to your best interest to keep waiting? I suggest move on to someone who really wants you.

Sounds like they think they have a stronger candidate.

Tell them you have another offer that you can't afford to lose, and that unless they take the next step within "X" days, you'll have to withdraw your application.

Then, if they don't come through, call them up, speak with the hiring manager and withdraw your application. Then accept one of the offers you've got.

Phone and face-to-face interview, being the top candidate, background check done, reference check done with all positive comments (don't know how glowing them though), heard that offer was on its way, everything's going smooth. Then, all of sudden, the hiring manager called me up and let me know that the position is under "re-evaluation". She doesn't know exactly how long it will take it done, and asked me to keep looking around for a job if I opt not to wait for 3 weeks. I've got a couple of offers on hold to take this one (cause I really really like this one). Do you think I should wait three weeks for this one or forget about it and go ahead take one of other offers? Pretty much alienated ...
